There are two known demos for The Simpsons: Hit & Run, and this page will cover both of them.
This article is a work in progress. ...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes. |
The Simpsons The Game Pc
To do: There may be more differences in both of these. List the unused files for each demo, and find a way to explore beyond the boundaries in the PlayStation 2 demo. Also, images/videos are needed. There are none at the moment. |

PC Demo
A demo for the PC version of the game came bundled with an issue of The Sun magazine around the time of the game's release. It is referred to as a 'special version'.
It can be downloaded here.
General
- Only the first four Missions of Level 1 (The Cola Caper, S-M-R-T, Petty Theft Homer, and Office Spaced) are playable, along with all three Street Races and the Wager Race. After completing Mission 3, Office Spaced, the Missions loop.
- There is no Main Menu, and thus, none of the features/content accessible via the main menu. After the Licence Screen and Logo FMVs, Level 1 is loaded.
- In the Pause Menu, the 'SAVE GAME' and 'QUIT TO MAIN MENU' options are disabled and cannot be selected.
- Upon obtaining all of the Collector Cards, the message that appears lacks mention of the Bonus Game, due to its exclusion.
- All cheat codes appear to be present and have no differences to the final game.
Oddities
- Despite being a demo, a lot of assets from the final game not used here remain in the files, such as the scripts for the rest of Level 1's Missions, Level 4's art files, and more.
- The file 'burns_mansion_interior_loop' is not present in the files, leading to a game crash should the player enter the region where said track should play. Without cheating or usage of external tools, the only place where this is possible is the top ground level of the backyard of Mr. Burns' mansion.
PlayStation 2 Demo
A demo for the PlayStation 2 release was included on a disc compiling multiple video game demos, videos, and other things that was included with Issue 41 of the Official PlayStation 2 Magazine.
It can be downloaded here.
General
- Only the first two Missions of Level 1 (The Cola Caper and S-M-R-T) are playable, as well as the Wager Race.
- The player can essentially only explore less than half of the map. There are respawn triggers placed near the Cemetery (Evergreen Terrace side) and by the bridge to the Rich Side that prevent the player from exploring further. If respawned by these triggers, a notice will appear that reads 'Area not available in demo.'
- In the Pause Menu, the 'SAVE GAME' option is disabled and cannot be selected.
- Costumes cannot be purchased. When interacting with a Costume Store, a notice will appear which reads 'Skin purchase not available in demo.'
- Phone Booths cannot be used; when interacting with one, a notice will appear which reads 'Car changing not available in demo.'
- Upon selecting the 'EXIT GAME' option from the Pause Menu, or completing S-M-R-T, the game cuts to a black screen with 'THE SIMPSONS HIT AND RUN' written in white.
- Interacting with one of the two available Doorbell Gags (at Lard Lad's Donuts and the Springfield Elementary School interior) causes Homer to speak his 'interact' dialog (usually used when interacting with switches). Additionally, no response is given by a character after interacting with the Doorbell Gag.
- The Wager Race has been altered to accommodate the shortened map. The race starts by the Grocery Store (despite Louie, who must be talked to start the Wager Race appearing in front of the Springfield Elementary School, a short distance away) and ends at the Wiggum family's house. The player is given one minute to complete this distance.
- There is no Main Menu, and thus any of its features/content, nor is there any Logo FMVs. Level 1 loads after the Licence Screen.
Oddities
Simpsons Hit And Run Pc
- Once again, leftovers from the final game are present.
- In the demo's root folder, a text file titled 'COMMAND' can be found. It contains the text 'skipfe skipmemcheck L1 M0'. This may relate to the absence of frontend content.
